Pondera County is susceptible to a wide variety of natural weather conditions: blizzards, heavy snowfall, extreme cold, ice storms, high winds, extreme heat, lightning, thunderstorms, tornados, hail and drought.

One of the best defenses against severe weather is to stay informed. By understanding and observing storm warnings and watches, adequate preparations can be taken to lessen the impact of severe or hazardous weather.

Know and understand the following watches and warnings:

Watch Severe weather conditions are possible within the next day or two.

Warning Severe weather conditions have begun or are about to begin in your area.

Blizzard Warning Considerable falling and/or blowing snow and  winds of at least 35 mph will combine to produce a blinding snow (near zero visibility), deep drifts, and life-threatening wind chill.

Heavy Snow Warning A snowfall of at least six inches in 12 hours or eight inches in 24 hours is expected.

High Wind Warning Sustained winds of at least 40 mph or gusts of at least 50 mph are expected to last for one hour. These thresholds are higher along the eastern front of the Rockies.

Travelers’ Advisory Issued when enough ice and snow are expected to hinder travel, but anticipated conditions are not serious enough to require warnings.

Weather Advisory Winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous.

Other warnings and watches may include frost/freeze, severe thunderstorm, flood or flash flood, and tornado.
