Car Seat Safety

Infants (Under 1 year of age):

  • Rear-facing car seat
  • Always ride in a car seat made for infants size
  • Face the back of the car in a car seat
  • Car seat is buckled tightly in the car and doesn't move when pulled on
  • Straps snug and can't fit more than one finger under the strap
  • Child should always ride in a back seat and never in front of an air bag

Toddlers (Over age 1 AND 20-40 pounds):

  • Forward-facing car seats
  • Always rides in a back seat and never in front of an air bag
  • Rides in a car seat made for kids his/her correct age and size
  • Car seat is buckled tightly in the car and doesn't move when pulled on
  • Straps are snug and can't fit more than one finger under the strap

Young Kids (Under age 8 AND over 40 pounds):

  • Booster Seats
  • Rides in a back seat and never in front of an air bag
  • Always rides in a booster seat
  • Have both lap and shoulder belts in the back seat of the car
  • Lap belt on child's hips, not stomach
  • Shoulder belt on child's shoulder, not the neck
  • Safety belt is snug, flat and comfortable on the child

Older Kids (Over 8 years of age):

  • Safety Belts
  • Always rides in a back seat and never in front of an air bag
  • Always uses a safety belt
  • Lap belt on child's hips, not his stomach
  • Shoulder belt is on child's shoulder, not the neck, under the arm, or behind the child
  • Safety belt is snug, flat and comfortable on the child
